From time to time I used to tweak my schedule depending upon my availability, travel and work. However the only constant thing that never changed in my schedule was waking up early. I have been waking for at 4 AM for a long time now and it has working really well for me. I have written before about the benefits of waking up early. I had to give up watching TV serials and following a strict schedule through out the day but last year I was not entirely happy with my schedule so this year I have decided to take control and get back in discipline.

The whole idea of this self organization is to learn new things that interest me and help in my career as well. My biggest two skill set right now is Drupal and Atlassian tools. I learned both when they were not part of my main work profile. I just learned them because I wanted, the extra time I spent self learning both of these skills helped me achieve so much. I was able to bootstrap a successful company and later emerge as the best Atlassian consultant in India but I realized very early in my life that learning should never stop and we should keep on adding more challenge otherwise life gets really, really boring.

The schedule that I am following right now is to help me learn something new and challenging at the same time. When I say learn something new it doesn't mean reading a book only. I always believed that learning happens when you actually build something. In mid 2015 I learned to create a native mobile apps not only for Android but also for iOS. My Java skills and Swift skills are not the greatest but when I was able to publish both the apps on the marketplace it actually means that I did learn something. On top of that I was paid for that.

Weekdays

3:55 AM - 6:00 AM: Wake up, learn something new.

6:00 AM - 7:00 AM: Exercise.

7:00 AM - 7:30 AM: Breakfast, get ready and leave for office.

7:30 AM - 9:00 AM: Travel and read a book.

9:00 AM - 6:00 PM: Office.

6:00 PM - 7:30 PM: Travel and read a book.

7:30 PM - 9:00 PM: Family time, rest and dinner.

9:00 PM: Sleep

Saturday: Family time
Sunday: learn something new.

Learn something new
In the above schedule I spend 2 hours everyday learning something new, that is 10 hours on weekends and 7 to 8 more hours on Sunday. That actually means I try to spend at least 17 to 18 hours per week, which is not a lot but it is good enough amount of time to build a new skill.

Yes that means working 6 days a week and only 1 day for recreational activity. I personally prefer doing something productive on Sunday it gives me good boost to get through the day and usually on Sunday I spend considerable amount of time learning a new skill and it give me direction for what needs to be done through out the week. For instance couple of months back I started honing my Drupal skills and I was quite happy with the results. These days I am actually working on my youtube channel. My idea for this channel is not to create educational videos on Atlassian tools only. My plan is to focus on wide range of technologies. I don't want to stick to a specific skill set. The focus of this channel would be mostly on processes and tools involved in Software development or IT in general. Let us see how it goes and I will be open to change the direction of this channel based on the feedback.

In the end it is all about being happy and staying happy. When you give more challenge to yourself and keep on building more skills to overcome those challenges it gives you lot of happiness and a feeling of achieving something and a sense of accomplishment.

I would like to know if you follow a daily schedule or not?

Do you follow an daily schedule in your life? What are these three pages?

Page 1: Pending Money
I don't have the luxury to hire an accountant or someone who can simply take care of collecting money for all the work that we guys do at sparxsys. At any given time we usually do 5-6 projects, sometimes more, sometimes less but we do have lots of projects which are in maintenance. Every month we need to ask our dear clients to pay us pending dues, that is important activity for us so that we can pay our salaries and cover our expenses. Every month I prepare a list of all such pending payments. The active projects priorities are also defined by how much cash flow is coming and from which client.

For instance there are two client. One is paying x amount for 2 month project and other is paying x amount for 1 month project, so obviouly we give more attention to the later. We make it very clear to the client that amount of money is directly proportional to the service and quality of work. Of course we never work below a certain limit.

Page 2: Open Leads
We always have projects in pipeline and many people contact us regularly, either for Drupal services or JIRA Training. Getting new projects and making new clients is also important. It also ensures that we have plenty of work that will pay for our expenses. Now sometimes we do get lazy on this aspect but as a business owner who need to make sure that business is coming otherwise the company will eventually fail.

Page 3: Daily Time Table
I follow a well defined time table everyday, expect when I need to meet someone. I divide my day into various slots and each slot is dedicated to my work based on their priorities and more importantly the value they bring to the company and every month I spend some time thinking about what activity need to be done at what time, so I can utilize my time wisely and have a productive day in the end. I keep improvising my daily schedule a bit but I always keep some uninterrupted time only for myself that is usually 3AM to 6AM in the morning when no one calls me. I don't check emails or browse the net. I disconnect internet sometimes during this time too. Rest of the day can never be planned ahead. A new client could ask you to meet or people will call us.

Running a company is not easy. In the end the cash flow matters, especially in service industry where we work under pressure. We just work 4.5 days a week and this has only been possible because we plan ahead with great precision.

ravisagar Sat, 11/08/2014 - 11:22

sparxsys

wake up on time

Productivity

Off

1227 views

Add new comment
<drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderForm" arguments="0=node&1=484&2=comment&3=comment" token="NiaQ-yHQPugKHJsDE5Apeekg7MkGOcPjikiQH8fvXz8"></drupal-render-placeholder>
Sat, 08 Nov 2014 11:22:16 +0000 ravisagar 484 at https://www.ravisagar.in Organize your daily Schedule - To get more productive (June 2014) https://www.ravisagar.in/blog/organize-your-daily-schedule-get-more-productive-june-2014 Organize your daily Schedule - To get more productive (June 2014)

For so many years I am following a rigid schedule for my self. Primarily it is all about waking up early, I have always been early riser and do important things in the morning. I have tried in the past to work/study late but that never really worked out for me. In fact I can hardly do any productive work after 5 PM.

Here is my schedule that I am following these days. I made little change in it, instead of 4 AM I am going to wake up at 3 AM. I really need an extra hour to finish never ending tasks.

3:00 AM - 6:00 AM: Do the most important thing to survive

6:00 AM - 7:00 AM: Go to gym

7:00 AM - 8:00 AM: Breakfast and get ready

8:00 AM - 9:00 AM: Go to office

9:00 AM - 1:00 PM: Primary Work of the day

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM: Lunch & rest

2:00 PM - 4:00 PM: Secondary Work of the day

4:00 PM - 5:30 PM : Miscellaneous tasks

5:30 PM - 7:00 PM: Go back home & rest

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM: Social media promotion & dinner

8:00 PM - 8:30PM: Sleep

I follow this routine everyday, except Sundays when I don't work or work very less. For rest of the days I follow it religiously. Also it is not possible to stick to the schedule all the time, sometimes I have to meet people, travel, but otherwise I don't make any excuses.

Why such a tough schedule?
First of all this is not difficult at all. I realized over the years trying lot of methods to being productive and everytime I came to know that there is no secret method for being productive, except working hard. I remember the time when I was in school, kids have fixed schedule and they follow it continuously for so many years, then in college our way of study changes a little bit, we can bunk classes and also have liberty to "not follow" the schedule.

When we enter professional world, things get worse. We are totally free to choose our schedule. That is why most companies have fixed timings for employees. I believe it is not bad actually you need someone to force you to work hard, of course to some extent only.

Now working in a startup is totally different, you will always have a passion and strong desire to achieve something big, but as a human being we tend to fall for various distractions. Everyone around you will be enjoying life (or they seem to) where as you are working. Your friends will be posting pictures of rafting in Rishikesh and you are busy compiling sass files.

Life is not easy for guys like us, so what do we do.

I am just extra strict with myself, I allow no space to get distracted, I follow a schedule and try to balance work-life so I don't feel exhausted. In my schedule I have 1 hour of time for gym.

I walk to my office, which is like 1.25 Kms from my place, so walk atleast 3 Kms everyday minimum.

I allow myself to check facebook and twitter feeds too.

I do most of my productive, important work early in the morning.

I use tools to manage my tasks
For keeping track of enormous to-do activities I use org-mode, it is by far the most powerful tool and take my word it is the best way to manage not only your to-do but as they say "your whole life".

For all official work we use JIRA, and I can tell you 100 reasons why your company should be using it

For you guys if you really want to get more productive, there is on book that you just can not afford to miss.

The Power of Full Engagement by Jim Loehr

(This is my affiliate link)

This is one book that you should be reading, it has lot of interesting use case (yeah we IT guys use this term a lot) rather stories of people struggling to manage their work and feeling burned out. After reading the book you will realize how important it is to maintain a balance of work with other activities.

Following a schedule and staying disciplined is most important.

ravisagar Sat, 05/31/2014 - 19:10

Jira

organize

Productivity

daily schedule

emacs

wake up on time

Entrepreneur

Off

1007 views

Add new comment
<drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderForm" arguments="0=node&1=464&2=comment&3=comment" token="Cf2GmC9FTocMWuMGc4_zMD4H9n1VuBg0OfYYXZLdtKU"></drupal-render-placeholder>
Sat, 31 May 2014 18:10:22 +0000 ravisagar 464 at https://www.ravisagar.in
