Doing things yourself is satisfying. If you have a colour printer then you should learn how to print your own passport size pics, so you won't have to run to a photographer or printing shop at the very last minute.

In the past I used Corel draw quite a lot for vector graphics designing like logos and brochures, but you can also use Inkscape and I have always relied on GIMP for graphics for making web banners and modifying images.
