Atlassian Updates - Product discovery, Templates, Jexo acquisition and more

Lot of exciting things happened in the Atlassian Ecosystem in the last week. Today let us discuss Jira Product Discovery, Jira Templates, JSM Security Advisory, Atlassian Unleash and Jexo Acquisition.

Jira Product Discovery is now in Beta

I have tried Product discovery in the past but I was not 100% convinced it. My main question was where will it fit between Jira and Confluence. Me as a consultant do not have enough valid reasons to convince my customers to get yet another tool but I think the idea behind it is good. However I was happy to see that I was able to set it up within my existing Jira instance.

I remember same excitement and noise about Next Gen Projects now know as Team Management projects which causes trouble to achieve consistent way of working.

  • After setting up Discovery Project for my instance I was able to create a new project of type discovery
  • There are different views like Impact assessment, impact versus effort, Roadmap, Plan, Delivery
  • In the Project settings there is an option to control Access, configure Notifications, Workflow and setup Automation
  • There is also a Slack integration

It looks okish so far but my main question is still the same. How this will work with Jira and Confluence.

Are Jira Templates of any use?

Personally I think in any tool there has to be a a way to improve user's journey. It could be from absolutely beginner to getting some idea of the product or just to understand how the tool will solve a specific problem. Jira is great for its customisations capabilities but in the beginning it can be overwhelming.

Jira Templates do provide quick way to understand how Jira can be used in a specific way like using it for ITSM or simple helpdesk or just task tracking. Having a library of these pre-configured configurations does help a lot.

I tried looking at the templates here but instead of first looking at the template like what issue types, workflows and configuration it will have, the option I got was to simply deploy it to my site which is fine but it would be good if we can see those configurations.

Also can people contribute to the template library and honestly these configurations should be exportable in some easy to import format like JSON. On Jira Data Centre one can export a workflow and also import it. Anyways step in the right direction.

JSM Server and Data Centre Security Advisory

Atlassian shared a critical security vulnerability in JSM version 5.3.0, 5.3.1, 5.3.2, 5.4.0, 5.4.1, 5.5.0 and suggested to upgrade to get a fix.

Atlassian wrapped Unleash event in Berlin

Last week on 9th February there was a in-person event in Berlin. The focus of the event was DevOps, unfortunately I could not attend the event but I will try to find some sessions on-demand here.

Jexo acquired by Appfire

Acquisitions are getting lot more common now in the Atlassian ecosystem. Recently Jexo was acquired by Appfire. When people start a company they usually have some goals in their mind and I am always interested in understanding more about the mindset of founders about acquisitions, mergers, selling their company or taking investment. People have built companies around Atlassian ecosystem and it is positive and encouraging to see such news. You can learn more about this here.

Question of the week

Last week someone asked on the community how to time travel in Jira, basically how to figure out the state of Jira issues in the past. I made a video on this topic to share my thoughts.

Video of the week

Well I make daily video, so all my videos are special at least to me but last week I got lot of good feedback on my video "Common Jira Questions".

Upcoming video

This week we are going to look at "Smart Issue Templates for Jira". This app is getting quite popular and I want to try it myself and share my reviews.
