Atlassian Updates - Organization detail fields, SLA emails, Google Calendar, Sub Tasks Story Points

Let us go through some of the updates from the @atlassian ecosystem from last week #OrganizationFields #SLAEmails #GoogleCalendar #SubTasksEstimation

Organization detail fields

If you are on Premium or Enterprise plans then you will get this additional feature to create fields under your Organization in your Jira Service Management project. This is really a good feature but there was a question on the community about using these fields somewhere else, may be for reporting. The organization fields you create will also be available under other organizations which is good to know. You can read about it here.

I think it is a good feature and it should be available in all plans.

Automated SLA emails

There was an interesting question on the community about sending emails based on SLA. Now emails can definitely be sent using notifications, automation rules and filters but for doing something specific based on SLA like sending an email when SLA hits 75% we need to use ScriptRunner or Automation. I have done that similar things using ScriptRunner, especially if you want to send an email to a DL. You can check this question here.

Jira Comments to Google Calendar

People love using Jira including me because of its flexibility and customisation. There was a question on the community about creating a Google calendar entry from a date in comment body.

This can be done by parsing the comments body for date and doing some automation but this approach is a bit fragile. Basically you want someone to take some action by a particular date. It would be better to just create a sub-task with due date some linked issues with some date fields.

Using automation rules or Google app script we can definitely create calendar entries. Check this question here.

Story Points on Sub Tasks

This question has been asked over and over again, it is surprising to see nothing significant from Atlassian so far. Yes as per Agile you should estimate at the Story level but often people want to break down stories into various sub-tasks and they want to store do estimation on sub-tasks which is possible because you can always add the field there but the native reports won't recognise that. It is possible to create own reports using eazyBI or do some automation to roll up the numbers but it is too complicated. You can check this question here.

Videos of the week

Last week I made a video on how not to become a hated Jira Admin where I talked about thinking about your future and possible things you can do and learn if you are a Jira Admin doing the same thing for years. Also I made a follow up video What next after Jira Administration, let me know if you want me to make more videos focused on career.
