Atlassian Updates - Smart queries optional, Insight improvements and Jira Email Batching

Time to go through the recent updates from the @Atlassian ecosystem related to Smart queries, Insight and email batching. #AtlassianUpdates #TeaWithRavi

Smart queries will be optional

Search in Jira is crucial feature, people rely on it to find the issues. We all know about the basic search, advanced search using JQL and of course the filters and dashboard that we created however there is something called as a "Smart query".

Its lets the users types something like "my open bugs" and Jira will perform a search based on the a JQL "issuetype = Bug AND status = Open AND assignee = currentUser()". I have made a video on Smart query.

You can also learn about Smart query commands here.

This is not always ideal because you may want to find tune the results further or want to type in your own JQL or click on filters. That is why Atlassian is going to make this feature optional which I appreciate. You can read about it update in this post.

Improvements to Insight

Not many people know that on Jira Cloud whenever you are working on a Jira Software based project from the backlog, deployment or active sprint board view there is a button called "Insight" that you can click to find out more about the current status and what to focus on.

Insight blocks in the Active sprints

  • Issue for attention: This show issues that are Stuck in the same status for a long time, Blocked issues which is based on the issue link blocks and also Flagged issues which is basically issue that you flag.
  • Sprint progress: This is simple yet useful view of the progress of a sprint.
  • Sprint burndown: Out favourite chart in Jira :) but this also show scope change
  • Epic progress: This show towards what epic that particular sprint is working towards.

Insight blocks in the Backlog

  • Sprint commitment: This information is quite useful because it will also show the average of the last sprints. A bit like velocity chart.
  • Issue type breakdown: Simple breakdown of issue count

I quite like this features and Insight is definitely useful. Read more about these updates here.

Jira Email Batching

Jira has notifications and let us be real, people love notifications. Well to be honest whether they something with those notifications or not is another story but it is a desirable feature of a tool to send emails. Jira has lot of events and it can get overwhelming when your email is full with emails.

Now Jira will send a consolidated email for the updates but for key events like "assigned to you" and "mentions" the email will still be sent immediately. I need to see how this work but yes I am happy with this feature. You can read about it here.

Video of the week

I don't make lot of videos on Confluence because I think it is already simple and easy tool to use, but there are of improvements lately, so I have decided to talk about those features and way to effectively use Confluence. I made a video on how to quickly create tables and charts in Confluence.

However because we at Sparxsys provide Atlassian Consultancy and this is what we do for living. We have now started making proper, planned Atlassian and Jira videos on our company's YouTube channel.
